domain name

A domain name is the address of a website. For example the domain name for Google is "www.google.com"

It's important to also note that a domain name is not an IP address. An IP address and a domain name are two separate things. Domain names were created so that one does not have to remember a string of numbers and dots in order to navigate to a computer that constants a desired website.

There are many types of extensions for the ending of domain names. Such common extensions are .com, .net, .org, and .edu, although many other uncommon extensions exist. Recently uncommon extensions have been getting more popularity and therefore becoming some what widely known. Such uncommon becoming common extensions are .biz, .info, and .tv to name a few.
